The Guided Reference in Dependency (GRID) is Colorado’s comprehensive guide to the legal standards governing dependency and neglect cases and best practices for child welfare attorneys. The GRID covers the stages of a dependency and neglect case and details black letter law, statutes, seminal cases, checklists of activities, and considerations for each hearing type. It also contains detailed fact sheets highlighting unique issues arising in dependency law.
As a complete reference guide for guardians ad litem and respondent parent counsel, the GRID is intended to assist you in your practice of dependency law in Colorado. The GRID can be easily used in the courtroom and at all stages of a dependency and neglect case, as the 550 page document is approximately the size of a statutes book and quick reference is facilitated by the use of tabs, a user-friendly formatting system, and an extensive index.
The GRID resulted from a yearlong collaborative effort from many contributing authors and a statewide advisory committee. We are thrilled to share this innovative resource and to advance legal representation for Colorado’s most vulnerable children and youth.
The original GRID was published in August 2012. August 2015 updates are now available in both electronic and paper form. Printed pocket part updates are available to all individuals who received the original bound GRID. The online version available through this website incorporates the 2015 updates into the text and eliminates the table of authorities and index; the online search and bookmarking features enable quick access to relevant topics and law.
If you are a GAL in dependency proceedings in Colorado, a state-paid parents’ counsel, a judicial officer, or a county attorney, you may request a bound copy of the GRID or a printed copy of the GRID pocket part update at no cost. Please complete a Request Form.
The Office of the Child’s Representative and the Office of the State Court Administrator Court Improvement Program would like to thank the Colorado Children’s Justice Task Force for providing financial support to make the original GRID publication and updates possible, the many individuals who served on the statewide advisory committee for this project, and the devoted attorneys who served as contributing authors for the GRID.
